Environmental Safety Systems for Marine Operations
Environmental performance at sea depends on systems that manage ballast water, wastewater and freshwater production reliably within the space and operating limits of a vessel. Maretek provides packaged and modular technologies for these essential marine functions.
Ballast Water Treatment Systems
The NK ballast-water treatment portfolio described by Maretek includes ozone disinfection, electrolysis with filtration, and ultraviolet treatment with filtration. These alternatives are intended to address invasive marine organisms while allowing system selection to reflect vessel configuration, ballast capacity and operating profile.
NK O3 Blue Ballast System
The NK-O3 system generates ozone from ambient air using electrical energy and injects it into the ballast-water process. Ozone is a strong oxidising agent and naturally decomposes back to oxygen after treatment. The modular arrangement separates ozone generation and injection functions, providing flexibility when integrating equipment into available vessel spaces.
- Modular construction to support different vessel layouts
- Integration with existing ballast systems
- Compact equipment arrangement and limited installation footprint
- Low or controlled pressure loss depending on the selected configuration
- Automated control and monitoring
- No routine chemical dosing for the ozone process described in the source material
Marine Sewage Treatment Plants
Packaged sewage-treatment plants are designed for ships, vessels and accommodation barges where treated effluent must meet applicable marine discharge requirements. Maretek's source portfolio refers to biological treatment based on extended-aeration technology, with modular capacities beginning at 25 cubic metres per day and project solutions extending to 1000 cubic metres per day.
- Macerating pumps to reduce the risk of clogging
- Compact layouts suitable for newbuild and retrofit projects
- Quick process start-up and tolerance for extended shutdown periods
- Odour-control considerations for onboard installation
- Treatment of the normal sewage streams generated onboard
Reverse Osmosis Freshwater Generators
Seawater contains suspended solids, dissolved salts and microorganisms that must be reduced before it can be used as clean or potable water. Maretek's freshwater-generator offering uses media filtration and cartridge filtration as pretreatment, followed by reverse osmosis to separate product water from the concentrated reject stream.
The amount and quality of freshwater produced depend on operating pressure, feed-water salinity and water temperature. Skid-mounted construction can simplify installation and maintenance while reducing the complexity associated with older multi-stage evaporation or flash-distillation arrangements.
